Fellowship Service Recap - 08/27 - 08/28/16

This weekend was our third in the Storms series, and this week Joe shared about Jesus as the Master of the storm, and how the best place for us to be is anywhere with Jesus.

Here's what we sang together this weekend:

Pre-service - "Unleashed" [Warren Barfield]
"Rejoice" [The Modern Post/Dustin Kensrue]
"This is Amazing Grace" [Phil Wickham]
"Lord of All" [Kristian Stanfill]
"Your Great Name" [Michael Neale, Krissy Nordhoff]
"God With Us" [All Sons & Daughters]

It was a great weekend together! Warren Barfield's "Unleashed" is a great song and ton of fun to play together. That was a "just because" kind of song. :)

For the rest of our singing together, we focused on themes of God being with us, Him being Lord of all and the name above all names, and the cross being the demonstration of God's unfailing love toward us. It felt like the songs really connected well with the themes of Joe's message from Mark 4, and everything came together well for a cohesive message and reminder for all of us to trust Jesus in all of life's trials and storms.

in the Son,

Bill

Songs We Sing, 08/30 - 08/31/14 - Fellowship Bible Church

This weekend was a great finish to our "Choose Love" series. I think this entire series has been transformational for our entire congregation, especially our couples. I think we will all reap in the long-term from what we have gained. I'm thankful for a pastor who has so much wisdom in relationships. I know I am a better man and husband for serving under his leadership.

Here's our set from this weekend:

"You Brought Me Back To Life" (Bb) [Zach Bolen, Brian Eichelberger]
"Love Is Not A Fight" (A) [Warren Barfield]
"Lord of All" (A) [Kristian Stanfill]
"Your Great Name" (A) [Michael Neale, Krissy Nordhoff]

I hope you had a great weekend wherever you were!

Songs We Sing, 08/16 - 08/17/14 - Fellowship Bible Church

Here is our set from this weekend:

Pre-Service - "Love Is Not A Fight" (A) [Warren Barfield]
"You Brought Me Back To Live" (Bb) [Zach Bolen, Brian Eichelberger]
"Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" (D) [Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio, John P. Rees, John Newton, Edwin O. Excell]
"I Stand Amazed (How Marvelous)" (D) [Charles Hutchison Gabriel]
"In Tenderness" (G) [Nate Garvey, Adoniram Judson Gordon, W. Spencer Walton]

It was a great weekend. Pastor Joe shared a powerful message about grace and forgiveness vs. revenge in our relationships. Our team did a great job, and we all really enjoyed teaching the new song, "You Brought Me Back To Life." It's been stuck in my head all week, and the lyric of this song is exactly the kind of thing I want stuck in my head–and the head of every person in our congregation–during the week!

I am so thankful for our team and for our incredible church.

Sola Christus!

Songs We Sing, 07/27 - 07/28/13 - Fellowship Bible Church

This weekend, our lead pastor shared the the first message in our series, "Positive Identity," where he taught how we are loved in Christ. He said that how we view God and how we view ourselves contributes to how we see the world around us. It was a powerful reminder of the love of God for us. You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here. Here's our service plan from this weekend:

"Unleashed" (F#m) [Warren Barfield, Scott Krippayne] Welcome "Happy Day" (B) [Tim Hughes, Ben Cantelon] Greeting Time/Announcements Musth Cycle Video/ The Bridge Promo - Chris Stewart of The Bridge Message - "Positive Identity: Loved" [Joe Hishmeh] "Jesus Take All of Me (Just As I Am)" (C) [Charlotte Elliot, Brenton Brown] "This Is Amazing Grace" (C) [Phil Wickham, Josh Farro, Jeremy Riddle] "Made Alive" (C) [Zach Bolen, Brian Eichelberger] Dismissal

Thoughts: This was a solid weekend. I am very excited about this series, which I believe will give our church a clear picture of our identity in Christ. I saw the truth of Joe's message really land in lives over the weekend, and I can't wait to continue this week!

For our singing this weekend, we opened the pre-service time with "Unleashed" by Warren Barfield for the countdown song. We sang this song because it simply focuses on the overwhelming love of God for us, regardless of where we are or the decisions we have made. This one is just a blast to play with our team, as well. We then began the service with "Happy Day." One of our new leaders, Trent Raines, led us in this song, and he did a great job. After Joe's message, we responded with "Jesus Take All Of Me (Just As I Am)," which is a beautiful rewrite of the great hymn, "Just As I Am." We sang this because I wanted our congregation to take a moment to reflect on the decision to come to Jesus just as we are, recognizing that He loved us before we ever made a hint of a move toward Him. We followed this with a new song for our church, "This Is Amazing Grace," which is a great co-write between Phil Wickham, Josh Farro, and Jeremy Riddle. I love the lyric of this song, and it moves me more and more as I sing it: "This is amazing grace/ This is unfailing love/ That You would take my place/ That You would bear my cross/ You would lay down Your life/ That I would be set free/ Jesus I sing for/ All that You've done for me." Amen! We then finished our services by celebrating what Jesus has done in singing "Made Alive," which has quickly become one of our church's favorite songs.

This weekend also happened to be the last weekend for one of our core team members and drummers, Jordan Hymon. He and his wife Ashley are moving to Nashville to pursue a career in music, and I felt that this weekend was a great send-off. Jordan is an extremely talented man, and a great teammate and coach at the same time. He has poured into countless students of our NextGen student bands, and he has helped set the environment of humility, encouragement, and excellence on our team. I will truly miss him here, and I know that God will continue to use him in a great way in his future endeavors.

All in all, it was a fantastic time of worship together. I already can't wait for next weekend!

Set List, 11/10 - 11/11/12 - Fellowship Bible Church

This week our lead pastor, Joe Hishmeh, taught about biblical submission in marriage as he continued our series, "Ephesians - United in Christ." It was the most clear and challenging explanation of Ephesians 5:21-33 that I have ever heard. You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here. In our singing, we focused primarily on how Jesus came and sacrificed Himself for the Church, that we could be redeemed and have eternal life. We also focused some on God aligning our hearts to His, that we might love others as He has loved us.

Here's our service plan from this weekend:

Welcome "In Tenderness" (G) [Adoniram Judson Gordon, W. Spencer Walton, arr. by Citizens] "Hosanna" (G) [Brooke Fraser] Greeting Time/Announcements Message - "Ephesians 5:21-33" [Joe Hishmeh] "Love Is Not A Fight" (A) [Warren Barfield] "Jesus Messiah" (A) [Daniel Carson, Ed Cash, Jesse Reeves, Chris Tomlin] "You Have Overcome" (A) [Bill Horn, Erik Oldberg] "Before The Throne" (A) [Charitie Lees Bancroft, arr. by The Modern Post] Dismissal

Thoughts: This was a great weekend. Our team did an excellent job. We had a new team member, Thomas Banley, on bass, and he did a great job. "Love Is Not A Fight" was a good connection with the message, and a challenge to fight for our marriages. "In Tenderness," "Jesus Messiah," "You Have Overcome," and "Before The Throne" were great for us to focus on the gospel and recognize the love that Jesus demonstrated for us at the cross. As Joe said, the gospel and Christ's love for us is the foundation for how we love one another. "Before The Throne" was a new rendition by one of Mars Hill Church's bands, The Modern Post, led by Dustin Kensrue. It takes it from the usual 3/4 time to 4/4, and it has a great and unique feel to it. Typically, the slower 3/4 arrangement has a more reflective feel to it, while this 4/4 version feels like a strong declaration of the truths contained in the lyric. I really look forward to singing this song in particular with the church again soon, especially the end of the second verse: "Because the sinless Savior died/ My sinful soul is counted free/ For God the Just was satisfied/ To look on Him and pardon me." What a great way to end our services this weekend!

Set List, 06/25 - 06/26/11 Fellowship Bible Church

This weekend, we focused on the idea of eternal reward, coming from Philippians 3:12-16. It builds off of last weekend's message, where Joe talked about finding no confidence or comparison in the flesh, but only finding confidence and the standard for comparison in Jesus Christ. Everything in this world will fade and pass away, except for God, His Word, and people, and those areas are where we need to prioritize our efforts and our energy. We need to “press on” toward knowing Christ more completely, and loving Him wholeheartedly. Here's our song list from this weekend:

Pre-Service - "Unleashed" (F#m) [Warren Barfield] Call To Worship - Jeremiah 9:23-24 "Your Grace Is Enough" (G) [Matt Maher] Welcome/ Offering/ Announcements/ Greeting time "Forever Reign" (Bb) [Jason Ingram, Reuben Morgan] "Lord of All" (Bb) [Kristian Stanfill] "How Great Is Our God" [Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves, Ed Cash] Message - "An Appraisal of Rewards" [David Hinkle] Response - "I Will Boast" (D) [Paul Baloche] Dismissal Post-Service - "You're The Only One" (Em) [Bill Horn]

This was a fun week in terms of the music. Over the past few months, I have gathered that much of our congregation responds to and enjoys songs that have a groove to them, like "Those Who Trust," so I decided to experiment a little bit, take a chance this weekend, and see what happened.

“Unleashed” - A few weeks back we did this as a post-service song on a Sunday, and it went over pretty well, so we decided to try it in the pre-service this week. I love the feel of this song. It has some really fun parts for our musicians, and it communicates a simple truth that God's love is overwhelming and completely fills us. I love the image of God "unleashing" His love on us, like He was holding back a massive wave, and eventually let it loose on us. I'm not sure the congregation quite knew what to do with this one in the first two services. I was more specific before the Sunday services that this song was for us to prepare our hearts and ready our minds for worship. It was fun to play, but I'm not sure if we'll do it again. I will be looking to the rest of our pastoral and leadership team for feedback on that one.

“Your Grace Is Enough” – I don’t think much needs to be said about this song. It is simple and clear, and celebrates the grace of God in a great way. Our congregation connects with it and knows it well, and it is a great way to start the service. We prefaced this song with the passage from Jeremiah 9:23-24 where God speaks of boasting and the only proper object of boasting: let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth” (ESV). I think the word translated as “steadfast love” is referring to God’s grace and faithful love toward us, and it was a great way to focus our hearts in preparation for this first song.

“Forever Reign” – This was the first time we did this song in Bb together since I arrived here (last time I tried to sing it in Ab, and it was incredibly low in the verses!). This song is a staple for our church, and I have become a big fan of it over the last few months. The verses and chorus were a great connection (more than I realized initially) between the way we began, with “Unleashed” and “Your Grace Is Enough,” to where we were going, focusing on the unique worth and glory of Jesus as the Lord of lords and King of kings. He is all we need, and He is the only one we should be exalting with our lives, first because of who He is, and furthermore because of what He has done in redeeming us through His cross and resurrection. I particularly love the bridge as it sings, “My heart will sing/ No other name/ Jesus, Jesus.” Because of the gospel of Jesus, this should be the truth of our hearts. May that be the case!

“Lord of All” – It’s been a few weeks since we’ve sung this song, but it remains a favorite of mine. Our congregation connects with it well. I have maintained that this is a song that the Church needs to sing, because it not only emphasizes the glory, power, and worth of Jesus, but it also draws attention to His judgment and wrath, which is not a frequent occurrence in worship music throughout the Church’s history. I believe that this is a major emphasis in Scripture, and therefore part of God’s glory that ought to be praised. I understand the fact that God’s judgment is infrequently mentioned because it’s not always a pleasant thought, to think that God will judge. However, this attribute of God also points to His greatness and His perfect power. As Scripture frequently points out, who will question God? Who will tell Him what to do? Who made the heavens? Who created man? Will the created one try and tell the Creator what to do? No. God is almighty, and none can match His power and His glory.

“How Great is Our God” – We haven’t done this song in a while, but it’s a song that we can all get our hearts around and that we can sing well. We tried something a little different at the end of the song, and the ladies on the team sang the chorus of “Lord of All” while I sang the chorus of “How Great is Our God” (they have the same progression). It was pretty cool to hear them both together, because they communicate very similar ideas about God’s greatness, power, and unique worth.

“I Will Boast” – Because David was focusing partly on Jeremiah 9:23-24, he asked if we could do this song as a response. I think it was very fitting, because we are tempted to think that many things in our lives are worth boasting about, but Jesus is the only thing worth boasting about. My youth pastor, James, used to say something to the effect of, “Let’s brag on Jesus.” Word.

“You’re The Only One” – This is the most recent song that I have written, and it is the first time we’ve done it together here at Fellowship. We did it in the post-service time, partly to introduce it into our church. It had particular meaning to sing on Sunday, because one of our people here, a man named David Decker, was killed in a motorcycle accident last night due to another driver’s error at an intersection. David is the father of two boys. The lyric of this song comes primarily from Psalm 139, which talks about the Lord’s presence everywhere. We cannot escape His sight or His presence. No matter what we are experiencing, He is there, and He is with us.

You’re The Only One Bill Horn

VERSE 1 In the shadows, in the empty, in the darkness, You are near, You are here In the trial, in the fire, in the pain, You are with me, You are with me

PRE-CHORUS 1 I won’t be afraid I won’t be afraid

CHORUS You’re the only one who hears me when I call You’re the only one to catch me when I fall

VERSE 2 In the quiet, in the silence, in the whispers You are listening, Lord, You hear me In the hopeless, in the helpless, in the hurting, You are life, You are the light

PRE-CHORUS 2 Your love never fails Your love never fails

BRIDGE The dark is like the light to You And night as bright as day Wherever I go, You remain

May we all be keenly aware of His presence with us in all circumstances. May God’s presence be known in suffering, in the suffering of two boys who lost their father, and in the suffering of two parents who lost their son last night. Jesus is a High Priest who understands and sympathizes with us, and can minister better than anyone to our needs. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:15-16 ESV).

I hope you had a great day of worship wherever you were, and that Jesus was lifted high like He deserves to be! I’m a part of The Worship Community, and you should check it out.

In the Son,

Bill

Set List, 02/14/10 Church at the Mall

Here's our set from this morning:

"Kingdom" [Kristian Stanfill] "God is Alive" [Steve Fee and Eddie Kirkland] "Beautiful the Blood" [Steve Fee] "Lord of All" [Kristian Stanfill] "True Love" [Phil Wickham] Message: "5 Love Secrets" by Pastor Jay Response: "I Want to Love You" [Todd Fields] Offertory: "Love is Not a Fight" [Warren Barfield]

I was ready for today. I have been looking forward to it on many levels. We had the entire youth group in the service this morning, which was awesome. Today was billed as "I Love My Church" Sunday, where every Connect Group made it a point to bring their friends with them, and to get people to identify what is about their church that they love. Today was also Pastor Jay's 14th anniversary as pastor of Church at the Mall. My first day as the worship lead for this great church was his 10th anniversary celebration, which means that I have been leading for this church for 4 years today. It's hard to believe. At any rate, there were a lot of reasons to be excited about today, and it really was.

There were quite a few mishaps, be it technical or performance-oriented. Each of us had a mistake in the band, except for our keyboardist, Amanda and our pianist, Melanie. I got thrown off by a miscue, and proceeded to sing the wrong line in the second verse of "Beautiful the Blood." We could not, for the life of us, find our groove on "God is Alive" with the click. "Lord of All" was right on (this one continues to be a favorite for me and for our people), and so was "True Love." Our Pastor was pulling in the parking lot with this song blasting on his car stereo. I love it. It was a perfect fit with his message today. I love how the Spirit makes it all fit together so beautifully.

The biggest technical mishap was at the beginning of the offertory, where we did "Love is Not a Fight" by Warren Barfield, which is an  amazing song. When I went to begin the acoustic-only introduction, there was only noise. Nothing was getting through but static. Of course, at this point, everyone in the room is watching me try and figure it out. I unplugged my mute box send to my tuner, which didn't help. I then jiggled the XLR cables on either side of the mute box, and it came on extremely loud, because my sound man had boosted it to try and get anything. However, because I unplugged my tuner, it was a different, crazier-sounding static. Meanwhile, our executive pastor, Steve, brought a mic out to put in front of the guitar to go old-school. Right as he got it set up, everything was fixed with my guitar, and we got rolling. I had to say something, so I joked, "Sorry about that!" and everyone (thankfully) laughed along. The song went great after that. It is really a beautiful, honest, and powerful song about love. It was borne out of adversity. See the story here.

It was just that kind of a morning. It seemed and felt like the enemy was trying to interfere with what went on today. God was certainly at work. During the prayer time, Jay called on the men of the church to pray and ask God to help them be the men He has called them to be for their families. Dozens of men came down to the altar to pray in the middle of the service. It was a beautiful thing to witness. The people responded powerfully in worship of our King, and that was also very encouraging and a reminder that it doesn't depend on everything going perfectly. I struggle with that, because of my perfectionism, but in the end God receives the glory because He is the one who makes the spiritual happen. I cannot manufacture it, nor can anyone else on the team. We can only facilitate. While it doesn't alleviate our responsibility to lead and to plan, that is truly a freeing thing.

I love my church, and I am so thankful that the Lord has brought me here. Happy Valentine's Day, by the way.

All the Glory belongs to Him,

Bill
