It's late! But here is our recap of our Easter services together last weekend, anyway!

It was our first Easter weekend together in our new worship center building, which makes it much easier for our congregation to hear one another singing. It made for a powerful time of singing, celebration, and worship together!

Fellowship Bible Church - 02/25 - 02/26/17

We had a great weekend together as we continued our series through the Sermon on the Mount, The Way of Life. This weekend, the focus was on our secret practices, and how God is more concerned with our relationship to Him and who we are in private than with how we seek to impress other people. It was a great weekend, and I think we were all challenged to focus more on our internal lives and private practices than performing for others.

Fellowship Service Recap - 10/29-10/30/16

This weekend was our second in our Together series, and we looked at why it's important for us to be "Together in Worship." Our adult discipleship pastor, David Hinkle, called us as a congregation to move from watching to participating in worship together.

It was a great weekend. The team did a great job leading, and we sang some of our favorites in our rehearsal of what we'll be doing together for eternity: exalting the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, with the song of those who have been redeemed!

Fellowship Service Recap - 10/08 - 10/09/16

[It seems I had an entire post written up, but it mysteriously disappeared when I saved it, so I'll try to remember all the profound things I had to say. ;) ]

We had a great weekend together as we continued our Awakening, looking at how the gospel is our celebration, and how it brings joy to the Father, to us, and to others who receive it. Joe focused in on Luke 15 and the "lost" parables of Jesus there, where He taught about the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. It was a beautiful reminder of how much the Father loves us and how He and all of Heaven celebrate it when we come back to Him!

The team did a great job leading together to serve the church, and all of the songs connected well with Joe's message–especially the new song, "My Victory," which I have been looking to introduce to our congregation for about two months. We hosted Crowder in concert last week, and it was awesome to hear the song sung altogether with many from our congregation and others around the city. The lyric was a great fit for this weekend, as Joe discussed the attitudes of the scribes and the Pharisees toward Jesus and toward the tax collectors and sinners, along with the dangers of us taking the same self-righteous attitude, which stifles joy. The first verse of "My Victory" sings, "You came for criminals, and ev'ry Pharisee/ You came for hypocrites, even one like me." It then turns to look at the amazing gift of salvation that was given to us through the victory of Christ's cross. My favorite part of the song is the bridge, which comes from John 1:29, where John the Baptist declares about Jesus: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"

I believe that for the Christian, something powerful happens when we speak or sing the truth of Scripture together. I believe that truth resonates within us and we cannot help but agree with it and be moved by it. That was the case for me this weekend, and for the first few services, I even had a hard time keeping my emotions reined in so I could finish singing it! It's a beautiful truth to sing together as we look to our wonderful Savior who has taken away our sin and who made us alive again when we were dead in our sin.

Fellowship Service Recap - 06/11 - 06/12/16

This was week two of our series through the life of David, Rise or Fall, and Joe shared about how to walk with God when we're waiting. It was a timely message for those who are walking through suffering, sorrow, and trials, and a powerful reminder of how God is at work even when we cannot see it and when we have to wait to see the outcome. He is faithful and good, and working it all together according to His sovereign purposes.

It was an encouraging and comforting weekend of worship together. There have been several unexpected deaths and illness in our church recently, and it was clear that God was at work in the timing and the planning of the entire service. We needed to hear the words of this message, and we needed to sing the words of these songs together. I'm thankful that the Lord is at work among us and reminding us who He is and what He has done and will do. He will never leave us or forsake us, and He will make all things new and right all wrongs.

May we all be reminded of God's faithfulness and trustworthiness as you walk through trials, through suffering, and through sorrow. He is with us.

Fellowship Service Recap - 05/07 - 05/08/16

We had a great celebration together on this Mother's Day weekend, as Pastor Joe shared a message about Mary of Bethany, and what we can learn from her example about sitting at the feet of Jesus. From the Gospel texts, he reminded us to sit at the feet of Jesus to listen and learn from Him, to express our hearts to Him, and to offer our lives to Him. It was a beautiful picture of the relationship we can have with Jesus when we focus on the main things.

It was a beautiful weekend of worship together. We had the chance to honor mothers and to reflect on our own relationship with Jesus. For our singing, we focused on themes of God as our Father who knows us, who loves us, and who has adopted us as His own sons and daughters. For our response time, we introduced a new song, "O Come To The Altar," which I have come to appreciate lately, and I was excited to sing it together this weekend. It has a similar theme to the gospel song "Just As I Am," in that Jesus calls us to leave behind our old lives and simply come to Him to find life. I think it will be one that we continue to sing together for a while. We'll continue teaching it over the next few weeks and reevaluate at that point. "Good Good Father" is a very emotional song that reminds us how God is a perfect Father to us, and how we are His beloved children. It's a song that I feel we can sing only so often because it is so emotionally heavy, but is is powerful when we do sing it together. This weekend, it was very fitting.

Overall, it was a beautiful weekend of worship together. Many people–both staff members and volunteers–worked long hours to get things ready in our new facility for the weekend. The hours of sacrifice by them is more beautiful to me than any building will ever be, though. They worked hard to make room for guests who need to hear the gospel and experience the saving power of Jesus! I'm so grateful for our church, and the opportunity to serve Jesus together with them.

FBC Service Recap - 04/02 - 04/03/16

This weekend, we began a new series concerning the decisions that a follower of Jesus must make, Decided. For this first week, Pastor Joe led us as we looked at the decision between grace and works. It was a beautiful reminder that our salvation and our standing with God does not rely on our works, but on the grace of God and the finished work of Jesus for our redemption. We are made alive together with Him.

It was a great weekend of celebration and remembering what Christ has done for us because of grace. We were dead, slaves, enemies, lost, hopeless and helpless; yet He made us alive, redeemed us, reconciled us, found us, gave us hope, and did it all for us when we could not. He is so good! 

The team did a great job in serving the church this weekend, as always, and it's a blessing to serve beside them. The services this weekend were simple, clear, and beautiful reminders of the grace of God toward us. It was just what the doctor ordered.

FBC Service Recap - 02/27 - 02/28/16

As we continued in the book of Acts this weekend, Joe shared about Paul's message in the Areopagus in Athens, where he shared the news about the resurrection of Jesus with a group of Greeks who recognized that there was an "unknown god." Paul endeavored to point out to them that the God of the Bible is the Creator, Sustainer, Lord, Father, and Judge of all.

For our singing this weekend, we primarily focused on how Christ's sacrifice for us is the only means for our salvation. This ties in with the ideas of our new creation in Christ, God as our Father, and judgement, as Jesus was condemned in our place for our sins. From there, we focused on how He is our Emmanuel, God With Us, and how He sustains and upholds us in every moment and every circumstance. Because of all of this, He is Lord of all and worthy of all the praise and the glory. 

It was a great weekend. Our team led well and worked hard to serve the church, and we really enjoyed our time together. It felt like a simple weekend, overall. Nothing to complicated or clever, just leading with our all because Jesus is worthy. There was something refreshing and rejuvenating about that.

This was our third week in the book of Acts for our Mission Possible series, and in his message, Joe shared about how the early Church endured suffering with the power of Lord working in them.

 It was a moving weekend of worshiping together. For our singing, we focused on themes of Jesus as our example of enduring suffering to advance the purposes of God (from Isaiah 53), Jesus as our sympathetic Great High Priest who has gone before us and walks with us (from Hebrews 4), and Jesus as Emmanuel who is always with us and who never leaves us or forsakes us (Matthew 1:23; 28:20; Hebrews 13:5).

As I looked across our congregation while we were singing this weekend, it was almost overwhelming to think of the suffering that some of our people are walking through or have recently walked through, and to see those same people limiting their hands and singing to the Lord, finding their hope and their refuge in Him. I was inspired to worship more because of these dear brothers and sisters. It is a beautiful thing to come together in worship, and part of that is bearing one another's burdens.

May you find your hope and confidence in our faithful High Priest, Jesus.

FBC Weekend Recap - 12/26 - 12/27/15

This weekend, Brian Tryhus taught from Psalm 23 about how the Lord is our Great Shepherd. He shared how God's people recognize the Shepherd's voice and follow Him, and in doing so, they experience provision and rest.

We returned to my preferred service order this weekend, with two songs up front and then three songs in response to the Word. While there are several excellent orders for worship services, I prefer this one because it reflects the concept of "revelation and response" in worship. God has revealed Himself in His Word, and that is how we know Him. When we know Him, we can then respond in worship. We have been away from this order for a couple of months, so it was nice to return to it.

In all, it was a great weekend of celebration and worship, thanking God for being our faithful Good Shepherd!

Songs We Sing - 10/24 - 10/25/15 - Fellowship Bible Church

This weekend we began a new series through the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, called Rebuild. In this series, we're looking at rebuilding a heart for God and a heart for the city where He has placed us. This weekend our outreach pastor, Kyle Brown, shared about how God brings "Redemption in the Ruins," and how God meets us in the midst of our failures and sin to call us back to Himself and to redeem and restore us.

It was a great kickoff to the new series, and a powerful reminder of the unfailing covenant love of God for us. We introduced Lauren Daigle's "How Can It Be" in the pre-service, and Kelsey Thomsen did an excellent job leading it. I love the lyric of that song, and I look forward to singing it more with our church. We also sang "Man of Sorrows (In My Place)," which we first introduced a little over a month ago. I love the strength of that hymn lyric, as it gives such a powerful depiction of Christ's sacrificial death for us.

For all of our singing, we wanted to focus on how we have been redeemed and brought back by God despite our sin. He is so good to us.

It was a wonderful time for us to cast aside our idols and look to our incomparable Savior.

Songs We Sing - 09/26 - 09/27/15 - Fellowship Bible Church

This week, we continued our Unstuck series as we looked at how to be a blessing to our families. From the story of Joseph and his sons, Pastor Joe looked at how to communicate the blessing to our families–especially to our children. It was a great challenge to increase our awareness of how we're blessing our families.

We had a great weekend of worship together. We centered our singing around the image of God as our good and loving Father, whose love is unconditional, and who sought us out even when we were far away, and who adopted us as His own sons and daughters by His grace. His love for us is the perfect example of how we ought to love one another, and be a blessing to one another, in our familes. The image of God as our Father is one that has always been especially moving to me. My earthly dad has always been abundantly clear that he loves me and is proud of me, so I have never had a difficult time picturing or feeling this kind of love from God. However, it never gets old to me to think that God has adopted me as a son. It is ridiculously beautiful and overwhelming to me that He has made me His own!

"In Tenderness," "I Stand Amazed," and "Man of Sorrows (In My Place)" all looked at the love and grace of God as demonstrated in Jesus' atoning sacrifice for us. "Good, Good Father" is a new song that sings of the truth of who God is as our Father, and who we are because we are His children. The simple but profound chorus sings, "You're a good, good Father/ It's who You are... / And I'm loved by You/ It's who I am..." Letting the truth of those two statements sink into our hearts is weighty and transformative. We concluded our services with Kensrue's "Rejoice," which calls us to rejoice because we are the beloved children of God, and because He never leaves us or forsakes us. He is our faithful Father, and I am His adopted son. And that is a beautiful thing.

This week we began our new series, "Unstuck," where we'll examine the areas of life where we all frequently get stuck. For this message about "The Intentional Life," Joe focused on the value of wisdom from the book of Proverbs, as well as addressing common reasons we resist wisdom in our lives. It was a powerful challenge to live intentionally and to seek out wisdom with all that we are.

We had another great weekend of worship together. Our team did a great job overall and led well. We sang some of our church's favorites in "Rejoice," "This is Amazing Grace," and "Lord of All." "Lord, I Need You" was a great moment in response to Joe's message, and we continued to teach our new rendition of a great hymn, "Man of Sorrows (In My Place)." It's always fun and interesting to sharpen a song as you continue to use it and share it with the church, as you see what parts work well and what parts don't connect with people. We'll continue to sharpen it in coming weeks, and I hope it's something we can continue to sing together, because Philip Paul Bliss' hymn lyric is definitely worth repeating.

Songs We Sing - 07/04 - 07/05/15 - Fellowship Bible Church

For our Fourth of July weekend, we looked at 1 Corinthians 13, which is most often associated with weddings. However, our family pastor Brian Tryhus examined the passage and showed how it teaches the church how to love one another as part of the body of Christ, and how love is the one gift that surpasses all others and that makes all the other gifts function as they should. As Brian said, "All we need is love."

For our singing, we focused on the unfailing love of God, and how He demonstrated His love for us in Christ's sacrificial death for us. His example of love for us teaches us to lay down our lives for one another. Because the Fourth fell on a Saturday night, we only held one service, and we used a very simple team, with Eric Dehner on a cajon-based percussion setup and me on guitar, vocals, and harmonica on one song. It was a great weekend, and it was very enjoyable to strip everything down just sing the songs together.

We had a powerful worship gathering this weekend. Everyone experiences trials in this life, so messages such as this one always resonate with us and remind us that we are not home yet. We have a path to walk here that will not always be easy, but Jesus will always be with us, and that brings us great comfort. That was the direction of our singing this weekend. Jesus is with us, He never fails, He never abandons us, He gives us strength to carry on, and He will see us through until we see Him face to face. I cannot wait until that day.

This weekend we continued our series, Never, with a message called "Never Go Back," where Pastor Joe shared about biblical repentance. It was a powerful call to leave behind our old lives and to cling to Jesus.

It was a great weekend together. During "Jesus, You," we had a synced video that showed the first names of everyone who made a decision to either trust in Christ for the first time or to reconnect with Christ. It became an opportunity for prayer together, and to reflect on Christ's powerful work in all of us. Other highlights were "Lord, I Need You" and "Rejoice," as they provided opportunities for us to repent and to trust the Lord in the midst of our struggles, recognizing that He is faithful, He is with us, and He will remain with us, no matter what. "Rejoice" seems to be an anthem for our congregation right now, and I think there is good reason for that. it really encapsulates a lot in the lyric. It reminds us:

• of God's worthiness of all of our worship
• that His mercies are new every morning
• that He has reconciled us through the sacrifice of the cross
• that He is our faithful Father
• that He knows and understands our trials and sufferings, having walked the path before us
• that He hears us when we cry out to Him

Songs We Sing - 03/21 - 03/22/15 - Fellowship Bible Church

This weekend, we continued in our series through Mark, called "Follow." We looked at Peter's denials of Jesus, and at what we can learn from him when we fall. It was a beautiful reminder of our need for grace in our own lives, and our need to give grace to others in our lives.

This weekend was incredibly fun. We had a brass section on the team, and Ronnie, Haley, and David did a fantastic job with it. On top of that, Ronnie had suggested the Five Iron Frenzy song, "Every New Day" for this weekend, and this was a song that I have always wanted to try to play with a band. It was such a blast to play it together. The overarching theme for all of the singing this weekend was also the passage I shared to open the service:

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
 they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness."  - Lamentations 3:22-23

It was beautiful to see how it all came together, and to share in the encouragement of the gospel this weekend. Even when we stumble and fall, He is faithful, and He will pick us back up. May we leave a legacy of the gospel of grace for others in our lives.
