Fellowship Bible Church - Easter - 04/15 - 04/16/2017

It's late! But here is our recap of our Easter services together last weekend, anyway!

It was our first Easter weekend together in our new worship center building, which makes it much easier for our congregation to hear one another singing. It made for a powerful time of singing, celebration, and worship together!

Here's what we sang together to celebrate the Faith, Hope, and Love that we have because of the risen Christ:

Pre-service - "Forever (We Sing Hallelujah)" [Bethel Music]
"Rejoice" [The Modern Post/Dustin Kensrue]
"Jesus!" [Citizens & Saints/The Northwest Collective]
"O Praise The Name (Anástasis)" [Hillsong Worship]
"No Longer Slaves" [Jonathan David Helser & Melissa Helser]

FBC Weekend Recap - 12/26 - 12/27/15

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas celebration with your families and friends!

This weekend, Brian Tryhus taught from Psalm 23 about how the Lord is our Great Shepherd. He shared how God's people recognize the Shepherd's voice and follow Him, and in doing so, they experience provision and rest.

Here are our songs from this weekend:

In Tenderness [W. Spencer Walton, Adoniram J. Gordon, Nate Garvey / Citizens & Saints]
Made Alive [Zach Bolen, Brian Eichelberger /Citizens & Saints]
You Never Let Go [Matt Redman, Beth Redman]
One Thing Remains [Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black ]
Rejoice [Dustin Kensrue, Stuart Townend]

We returned to my preferred service order this weekend, with two songs up front and then three songs in response to the Word. While there are several excellent orders for worship services, I prefer this one because it reflects the concept of "revelation and response" in worship. God has revealed Himself in His Word, and that is how we know Him. When we know Him, we can then respond in worship. We have been away from this order for a couple of months, so it was nice to return to it.

In all, it was a great weekend of celebration and worship, thanking God for being our faithful Good Shepherd!

in the Son,

Bill

Songs We Sing - 08/29 - 08/30/15 - Fellowship Bible Church

This week, we concluded our Family of Tomorrow series, with Pastor Joe sharing about leaving a legacy of prayer, love, and forgiveness for our families. He pointed to the story of Jacob, Esau, and Joseph as an example of how things can change in later generations if we demonstrate those things in our families today. It was a great picture of legacy.

Here are our songs from this weekend:

"It is Finished" [Dustin Kensrue]
"Hosanna" [Brooke Ligertwood]
"One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" [Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black]
"It is Well" [Philip Paul Bliss, Todd Fields]

We shortened our services to give extra time for our people to join small groups if they hadn't yet, and it was refreshing to change up the order a bit and try something new and different with our services. It was a very good weekend of worship together. Our team did a solid job, and we sang some of our church's favorite songs together. It was a beautiful weekend.

I hope you had a great weekend of worship!

in the Son,

Bill

Songs We Sing - 07/04 - 07/05/15 - Fellowship Bible Church

For our Fourth of July weekend, we looked at 1 Corinthians 13, which is most often associated with weddings. However, our family pastor Brian Tryhus examined the passage and showed how it teaches the church how to love one another as part of the body of Christ, and how love is the one gift that surpasses all others and that makes all the other gifts function as they should. As Brian said, "All we need is love."

Here are our songs from this weekend:

Pre-Service - "The Love of God" [Frederick M. Lehman, Meir Ben Isaac Nehorai, my arrangement]
"There is a Fountain" [William Cowper, arr. by Zach Bolen]
"This is Amazing Grace" [Phil Wickham, Josh Farro, Jeremy Riddle]
"One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" [Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black]
"You Alone Can Rescue" [Matt Redman, Jonas Myrin]
"Rejoice" [Dustin Kensrue, Stuart Townend]

For our singing, we focused on the unfailing love of God, and how He demonstrated His love for us in Christ's sacrificial death for us. His example of love for us teaches us to lay down our lives for one another. Because the Fourth fell on a Saturday night, we only held one service, and we used a very simple team, with Eric Dehner on a cajon-based percussion setup and me on guitar, vocals, and harmonica on one song. It was a great weekend, and it was very enjoyable to strip everything down just sing the songs together.

I hope you had a great weekend of worship wherever you were, and that you had a great celebration for the Fourth of July.

Songs We Sing - 04/11 - 04/12/15 - Fellowship Bible Church

This weekend, we began a new series, entitled Never. In this series, Pastor Joe is going to share about how life in Christ enables us to "Never Give In" (to temptation), "Never Go Back" (to our old lives), and "Never Give Up" (in the face of trials). This week, Joe shared some practical wisdom about temptation. For our singing this week, we focused on Jesus' faithfulness to us as our Great High Priest (Hebrews 4), and how He is all we need.

Here are our songs from this weekend:

"The Mighty Hand of God" [Citizens & Saints - Zach Bolen, Dustin Kensrue, Cam Huxford, Brian Eichelberger]
"Before the Throne" [The Modern Post - Charitie Lees Bancroft, arr. by Dustin Kensrue]
"One Thing Remains" [Bethel Worship - Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black]
"Always" [Kristian Stanfill, Jason Ingram]
"You Never Let Go" [Matt Redman, Beth Redman]

The week after Easter always feels a bit like recovery, especially when Easter services are done off-site. There is lingering fatigue and fogginess in the wake of such a significant gathering for the church body. Lots of hours are spent both setting up and tearing down the many pieces that go into such an event. Despite the overall tiredness of our team, we had a great weekend of worship together. Our team did a great job, and the congregation was engaged and worshiping together. I will never get over the joy of hearing the Church sing to Jesus for who He is and what He has done!

The first two songs this weekend really established the foundation for where we were going this weekend, in that our standing with God is dependent on the finished work of Jesus and not our own ability to "get it right." Instead, we seek to honor God and reflect Him with our lives because of who He is and what He has done for us. Our confidence is in Him—not ourselves.

The final three songs were practice for us, giving us the opportunity to trust the Lord in the midst of our struggles and difficulties. All three are powerful expressions of faith and trust in Jesus, who is faithful and constant no matter what we're facing. He is God with us, and we do not have to be afraid of reality any longer. We can move forward in confidence that He's got us, and that He will never let us go.

Worship Gatherings, 09/06 - 09/07/14 - Fellowship Bible Church

Late update here. We started our series through 1 Thessalonians this past weekend, focused on having a Ready Faith, Love, and Hope. I'm excited as we continue this next weekend.

Here's our set of music from this past weekend:

"I Am Set Free" (E) [Leslie Jordan, of All Sons & Daughters]
"Sing to the King" (E) [Billy Foote, Charles Silvester Horne]
"Forever Reign" (A) [Jason Ingram, Reuben Morgan]
"Forever (We Sing Hallelujah)" (A) [Christa Black Gifford, Kari Jobe, Brian Johnson, Jenn Johnson, Joel Taylor, and Gabriel Wilson]
"Before The Throne" (A) [Charitie Lees Bancroft, Vicki Cook, arr. by The Modern Post]

It was a fantastic weekend.

  • We introduced "Forever (We Sing Hallelujah)" to our weekend services (we sang it for a worship night recently), and it was a very powerful moment.
  • We did something similar to the Hillsong Chapel arrangement of "Forever Reign" for communion, and it was refreshing.
  • We sang "I Am Set Free" by All Sons & Daughters in the pre-service time, and I love the harmony that the duo puts together. It's strong and beautiful. I look forward to singing that one again sometime soon.
  • Our team did an excellent job with a few new tunes in the mix, and a fresh take on another. I'm so thankful for all their continued hard work and preparation!

I hope you had a great weekend of worship wherever you were!

Songs We Sing, 06/07 - 06/08/14 - Fellowship Bible Church

This weekend was another great weekend with our church. Our team was really solid throughout the weekend. Our family pastor Brian Tryhus preached a powerful and challenging message about hope from the book of Hosea. It was also a communion weekend, which is always a particularly meaningful weekend for our congregation.

Here's our order from this weekend:

"Hail The King" (G) [Zach Bolen, Brian Eichelberger]
Message
Communion - "How Deep The Father's Love For Us" (D) [Stuart Townend]
"One Thing Remains" (Bb) [Christa Black, Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle]
"This Is Amazing Grace" (Bb) [Phil Wickham, Josh Farro, Jeremy Riddle]

It was a solid and meaningful weekend for our congregation, and I believe Jesus was lifted high by our church. Above all, I feel that many of us were wrestling with conviction from the message from the prophet Hosea, and were keenly aware of the incredible, unfailing love of God.

Songs We Sing, 03/15 - 03/16/14 - Fellowship Bible Church

This weekend, Pastor Joe continued our series on worship with a message about God's steadfast love. He called the church to comprehend the unfailing love of God and to reciprocate that kind of love in our relationships on this earth. It was a beautiful reminder of God's incredible love for us. You can listen to or watch the message and service here.

Here's the order from this weekend:

Pre-Service - "Sweetness of Freedom" (C) [Zach Bolen, Brian Eichelberger]
Call to Worship - Corporate Reading - Psalm 107:1-2 ESV
"In Tenderness" (G) [W. Spencer Walton, Adoniram J. Gordon, Nate Garvey]
"Name Above All Names" (A) [Bill Horn]
Greeting Time/Announcements
Message - "Worship: Steadfast Love" [Joe Hishmeh]
"Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" (F) [John Newton, Edwin O. Excell, Louie Giglio, Chris Tomlin, John P. Rees]
"One Thing Remains" (Bb) [Christa Black, Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle]
"This is Amazing Grace" (Bb) [Phil Wickham, Josh Farro, Jeremy Riddle]

This was one of my favorite weekends in recent memory for our church. Our team did an amazing and creative job, and everything connected well throughout the service. It was a powerful and encouraging time of worship together. I am really excited about what is happening in our congregation lately. I love my church!

For the songs this weekend, we focused on God's faithful love for us in Christ. In the pre-service time, Kip led us as we sang "Sweetness of Freedom," which is a new one for our congregation. I love this song, and the celebration of the freedom we have because of Christ–freedom to follow Him completely, not in fear, but in love and worship. We then opened the services up after reading Psalm 107:12 together with singing "In Tenderness," which is one of our church's favorites. It was a great way to begin celebrating the faithful, steadfast love of God, which pursued us even when we were enemies and far from Him. We then continued teaching "Name Above All Names" to the church. After the message, we responded with "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)." We hadn't sung this song in a while, and it felt refreshing to sing it again and celebrate how God had removed every chain from us in His perfect grace and mercy for us, so that we could be free to love Him and worship Him. We continued from there to "One Thing Remains," where we took some liberties with the playing of the song. I loved how the team came together with a bunch of ideas and made something fresh out of something that had become pretty familiar to us. It was definitely one of the high points of the service and weekend to me. To end our time together, we sang "This Is Amazing Grace," which has quickly become one of my favorite songs. The chorus beautifully sums up our response of worship because of the gospel: "This is amazing grace/ This is unfailing love/ That You would take my place/ That You would bear my cross/ You would lay down Your life/ That I would be set free/ Jesus, I sing for/ All that You've done for me." Amen.

Hope you had a great weekend of worship wherever you were!

Songs We Sing, 02/01 - 02/02/14 Fellowship Bible Church

This weekend we continued our series, "Obedience," and Joe shared about how we are called to follow Jesus in all situations. Whether we are experiencing crisis or success, we are to follow His leadership and submit to Him, rather than seeking out our own means for trying to save ourselves. Only Jesus can deliver us. You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here.

Here's our service plan:

Pre-Service - "Kingdom" (A) [Kristian Stanfill]
"Before The Throne" (A) [Charitie Lees Bancroft, arr. by The Modern Post]
Greeting Time
Announcements
Message - "Obedience: Calling" [Joe Hishmeh]
Communion Song - "Carried To The Table" (A) [Leeland Mooring, Marc Byrd, Steve Hindalong]
"One Thing Remains" (Bb) [Christa Black, Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle]
"You Never Let Go" (Bb) [Matt Redman, Beth Redman]
Dismissal

Thoughts: This was a great weekend together. Our team did a fantastic job. Trent Raines co-led with me this weekend, and he led powerfully during our communion time with "Carried to the Table," which is a perfect communion song. Also, one my guitar students, Brynn Baker, played lead guitar for the first time as part of our weekend service team, and she knocked it out of the park. She continues to step up and do a great job wherever she is serving (at 13 years of age!!! I had just picked up guitar at 13 years old, and she would play circles around an 18-year-old version of me...). Her playing was definitely a bright spot for me this weekend, especially when she nailed the lead part on "Kingdom," which is one of my favorites. "Before The Throne" continues to be a song that really resonates with our congregation. I prefaced our singing of it by reminding us that even our worship is acceptable to God only because of Jesus' finished work for us, and not because of anything we have done or can do. Jesus is everything for us! We finished our time together with two songs that called us to trust in Jesus and His faithfulness: "One Thing Remains," and "You Never Let G0." These two songs are simple declarations and powerful reminders for the Church to sing together, and it was a fitting way to respond to Joe's message this week.

At some point in the near future, I hope to take some time to write about my recent trip to the Philippines with the Trash Mountain Project. It was both challenging and inspiring, and I'm still processing much of what I saw and experienced. The Lord is doing great things there, and He is raising up some amazing leaders to advance the gospel in some of the darkest parts of the world. Please pray for them as they fight the good fight!

Your turn: what were your experiences, observations, or take-aways from this past weekend?

Songs We Sing, 11/16 - 11/17/13 Fellowship Bible Church

As followers of Jesus, we are guided by the Word of God and the Spirit of God. This was the message from our Family Pastor, Brian Tryhus, as we continued our series titled "Faith." It was a great reminder for us to look for guidance in the right places. You can listen to or watch the entire messages and services here.

Here's our service plan:

Pre-Service - "Lead of Love" (G) [Aaron Tate of Caedmon's Call]
Welcome
"I'll Fly Away" (G) [Albert E. Brumley]
"Your Grace Is Enough" (G) [Matt Maher]

Greeting Time Announcements Message - "Faith: Guided" [Brian Tryhus]
"It Is Well" (Bb) [Philip Paul Bliss, Todd Fields, Horatio G. Spafford]
"One Thing Remains" (Bb) [Christa Black, Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle]
"Rejoice" (Bb) [Dustin Kensrue, Stuart Townend]
Dismissal
Post-Service - ""Lead of Love" (G) [Aaron Tate]

Thoughts: This was a solid weekend of worship with our church. It was one of those weekends where I felt the Lord was strong in my weakness. The lyric that stuck with me throughout the weekend was from "Lead of Love": "Looking back I can finally see/ How failures bring humility/ Brings me to my knees/ Helps me see my need for Thee." That resonated with me this weekend. During the message in the first service on Saturday night, I was having a conversation with my wife and keeping my eye on the timer for the message. When it said four minutes left, I quickly headed upstairs, only to hear music playing and to find the speaking pastor, Brian, in the stairwell. Needless to say, I panicked. Kip did a good job covering and getting the band started without me, and I tried my best to quietly head out to my position on the platform and join in. Talk about embarrassing! Anyway, that only contributed to how "off" I felt through the weekend. I'm not sure if it was allergies or a slight cold, but I just didn't feel like I had any energy or focus.

Despite all of that, the team did a great job, and our congregation was really engaged throughout the weekend. I felt the Lord was glorified, and that people responded to the Word of God through the message. Ultimately, the Lord was strong in my weakness. It seems that some of the greatest weekends of worship I experience or witness in our church are those where I feel weakest. I don't believe that's a coincidence, either. :)

The highlights for me were having my friend Ronnie Murphy on mandolin, singing an older favorite of mine in Caedmon's Call's "Lead of Love," "It Is Well," and one of our congregation's new favorites in "Rejoice." The church has really seemed to latch onto that song. I love the declaration and the energy in that song, and I'm thankful we can sing it together.

So, I leave you with this: what were your experiences, observations, or take-aways from this past weekend?

Songs We Sing, 05/11 - 05/12/13 - Fellowship Bible Church

This past weekend, we continued in our fifth message of our series - "Seven." Our pastor, Joe Hishmeh, shared from Philippians 2:3-4 about the importance of having healthy friendships in following Christ. The best way to have great friendships is to be a great friend--one who loves like Jesus has loved us. Joe called us to being available, building up, accepting, enduring, sharpening, and understanding in our friendships. It was a great call for us, and it was something I needed to hear this weekend. You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here. Here's our service plan from this weekend:

Welcome "Hosanna (Praise Is Rising)" (G) [Paul Baloche, Brenton Brown] "Unchanging" (G) [Chris Tomlin] Greeting Time/Announcements Message - "Seven: Friends - Philippians 2:3-4" [Joe Hishmeh] "One Thing Remains" (Bb) [Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black] "How He Loves" (Bb) [John Mark McMillan] "Everlasting God" (Bb) [Brenton Brown, Ken Riley] Dismissal

Thoughts: This weekend was a great Mothers' Day Weekend. Joe's message was very challenging, and our times of singing were really moving. It was highlight to sing "One Thing Remains" and "How He Loves" together again. I really enjoy both of those those songs because they portray the love of God for us so uniquely and powerfully.

Since Joe was talking about friendship and how our relationships ought to reflect the gospel and how Christ gave Himself up for us, you can see that we sang primarily of Christ's unfailing love and grace for us. I believe when we sing of true character of God, we are also in a sense calling ourselves to reflect that character in our own lives. What we praise, in some way we also desire to be. If we want to love like Christ, let's worship Him for His amazing love for us, which He demonstrated at the cross.

Songs We Sing, 03/23 - 03/24/13 - Fellowship Bible Church

For our tenth week of our 2 Corinthians series - "Purpose In Christ," our family pastor, Brian Tryhus, preached through 2 Corinthians 11-12, and taught about how we as believers need to handle trials and difficulties in our lives. He challenged us to recognize our own weakness, and to find our strength in Christ alone. It was a powerful reminder to all of us. You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here. Here's our service plan from this weekend:

Pre-Service - "Beautiful" (C) [Phil Wickham] Welcome/Call to Worship "Hosanna (Praise Is Rising)" (G) [Paul Baloche, Brenton Brown] Greeting Time Child Dedications Announcements/Trash Mountain Documentary Trailer Message - "Purpose In Christ, pt. 10" [Brian Tryhus] "It Is Well" (B) [Horatio G. Spafford, Todd Fields] "Always" (B) [Kristian Stanfill, Jason Ingram] "One Thing Remains" (B) [Christa Black, Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle] Dismissal

Thoughts: This was a great Palm Weekend celebration. Our team did a great job! We also had two brand new team members: Matthew Gonzales on drums and Dawn Phoenix helping with background vocals. It was great to see them connecting with the team and finding their fit in ministry. I loved how everything connected in our services, and the songs we sang this weekend were some of my favorites. It had been a while for all of the final three songs, so it was refreshing to sing them together with our congregation once again. I am so grateful for what the Lord continues to do in our church. I'm am really pumped about Good Friday and Easter this week! It will be our best one yet!

What were your thoughts or experiences from your worship gathering this weekend?

Set List, 10/27 - 10/28/12 - Fellowship Bible Church

This week our pastor, Joe Hishmeh, continued our discipleship series, "Ephesians - United in Christ." In the message for the weekend, Joe shared from Ephesians 5:1-8 how God calls us to "Love not Lust." When we settle for lust instead of love, we are selling ourselves short, and accepting far less than God's best for our lives. It was a powerful challenge to pursue love and our true identity and purpose in Christ. You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here. Because of the drive of the message, we focused on the amazing love of God that never changes, never fails, never leaves us, never forsakes us, and never gives up.

Here's our service plan from this weekend:

"Sing to the King" (D) [Billy Foote, Charles Silvester Horne] Welcome/Greeting Time "One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" (Bb) [Brian Johnson, Christa Black, Jeremy Riddle] "Forever Reign" (Bb) [Jason Ingram, Reuben Morgan] "Your Great Name" (Bb) [Michael Neale, Krissy Nordhoff] Message - "Ephesians 5:1-8" [Joe Hishmeh] "The Love of God" (D) [Frederick M. Lehman, arr. by Bill Horn] "Amazing Grace" (D) [John Newton, Edwin O. Excell, John P. Rees, arr. by Bill Horn] Offering/Announcements/Dismissal

"Sing to the King" - We opened our services this weekend with this great hymn rewrite by Billy Foote. One of our newer team members, Cindy Gular, led us on this one and did a great job. I loved opening with this song, as it set our eyes on our hope: Christ's victorious return and the consummation of our salvation. As Joe said in his message, "Our lives our best when long-term values are  the basis of our short-term decisions." When we keep our eyes on our future and our hope in Christ, we live differently.

"One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" - We continued after the welcome time with this song, which helps us declare the truth about God's constant and unchanging love for us. I love singing this song together with our congregation.

"Forever Reign" - This song says a lot about God and His character. I love how it juxtaposes God's perfection against our weakness in the verses, helping us to see and sing of our great need for Him.

"Your Great Name" - We finished the first part of the service with this song, which points us to the cross and the redemption that we find in Christ alone. He is Lord, and He is high and lifted up, and one day every knee will bow before His throne and confess that truth. My hope for our congregation is that we will confess that truth not only with our words, but with our lives.

"The Love of God" - We responded to the message with this profound hymn about God's love. I (along with most everyone else who hears this song) particularly love the last verse: "Could we with ink the oceans fill, and were the skies of parchment made/ Were ev'ry stalk on earth a quill, and ev'ry man a scribe by trade/ To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry/ Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky." That is beautifully said.

"Amazing Grace" - We tagged this onto the end of "The Love of God" to finish out our services. We did something we don't normally do, in that we sang it only with piano. It was a nice moment for us all to hear one another singing this most familiar of hymns together. I feel that it also helped tie everything together from the service: recognizing our own sinfulness, the greatness of God's love and grace for us, and fixing our eyes on our hope in Christ.

Thoughts: This weekend was a great weekend. Our team did a great job, and I am happy with how each song tied together with the focus. I felt that the church sang well in each of our services, and that people were engaging with the truth of God and His gospel in the songs that we were singing. The weekends are consistently a highlight of my week, as we remember the gospel and praise God for who He is and what He has done for us.

What were your thoughts or experiences on your worship experience this weekend?

Set List, 10/06 - 10/07/12 - Fellowship Bible Church

(an image of our Ephesians set design, courtesy of our Tech Director, Wyatt Johnston)

This week our pastor, Joe Hishmeh, continued our discipleship series, "Ephesians - United in Christ." In his message, Joe shared from Ephesians 3:14-21 about submitting our lives to Jesus, and asking for His presence to dwell in us, His love to thrive in us, and His character to fill us. This, Joe said, is the greatest prayer we can pray as believers. When these things are a reality in our lives, the gospel will advance through us to others. You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here.

For our singing this week, we focused on the powerful love of God, which surpasses all we can imagine.

Here's our service plan from this weekend:

"In Tenderness" (G) [W. Spencer Walton, Adoniram J. Gordon, Nate Garvey] Welcome/Greeting Time "God Is Able" (B) [Ben Fielding, Reuben Morgan] "One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" (B) [Brian Johnson, Christa Black, Jeremy Riddle] "Beneath The Waters (I Will Rise)" (G) [Scott Ligertwood, Brooke Ligertwood] Message - "Ephesians 3:14-21" [Joe Hishmeh] Communion "Stronger" (B) [Ben Fielding, Reuben Morgan] Offering/Announcements/Dismissal

"In Tenderness" - We taught this song over a few weekends recently, and this was a refresher weekend for the song. It is quickly becoming one of my new favorites, and it is a great fit as we walk through the book of Ephesians. The chorus captures the heart of God in the gospel very succinctly - "O, the love that sought me/ O, the blood that bought me/ O, the grace that brought me to the fold of God/ Grace that brought me to the fold of God!" I simply love declaring this together with the Church!

"God Is Able"- We sang this song coming out of the welcome and greeting time, and it focused us right in on where we were going this morning. We sang this song in particular because part of our passage this week was Ephesians 3:20-21:

"Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen." (Ephesians 3:20-21 ESV)

This is a solid staple in our worship song vocabulary here at Fellowship, and it does a great job of building our confidence in the one who is truly able, our Lord Jesus Christ. He conquered sin and death, and He has redeemed us and given us life. There is no one else who has done what He has done, or who could do what He can do.

"One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" - This is another fairly new song that we introduced about two months ago. I love the strong declaration that this song makes regarding God's faithful love. Again, this song builds our hope and our confidence in who Christ is and what He has done/will do.

"Beneath The Waters (I Will Rise)" - This is a new song that our NextGen director Erik Oldberg and his wife Sarah introduced last weekend. We continued teaching it this weekend, and one of our newer worship team members, Cindy Gular, led us on this song. It is a very strong and beautiful song, but I'm not sure yet of how it serves as a congregational song in which our people can participate besides the chorus.

As an aside, I also wanted to make a note about using this song: we made one change before we introduced it, in that we adjusted one line of the song. In the second verse, the original recording by Hillsong has the line, "Salvation through repentance." This elevates a result of saving faith to a causal position with regards to our salvation. We are "saved by grace through faith," according to Ephesians 2:8-9. Repentance and baptism, which are connected with salvation by Peter in the book of Acts (Acts 2:38), are demonstrations of our faith, but faith comes first. We believe and therefore we are saved. Repentance and baptism are not salvific, meaning they do not cause salvation or result in our redemption. When we truly believe in Christ, we will do those things that are fitting of a saving relationship with Christ, but salvation does not come through those things. They are not the means of salvation--faith is. While most people would not notice or make a big deal about the word "through" in this line, I think it is a huge deal, because it communicates that salvation is somehow in our hands, which is not the case. Salvation is a gift, and nothing we can do can earn it. We simply place our trust in Him as our divine substitute at the cross, recognizing our own sinfulness and desperate need for rescuing. Because of this, we changed the line to say, "Salvation to repentance," trying to clarify that we repent because we have saving faith. The bottom line is this: as leaders, we are responsible for what we teach our people (and yes, we ARE teaching our people through the songs that we sing together). I want us to be as clear as possible with the message of the gospel. It has been entrusted to us as His Church and we must be crystal clear with it, because the world around us is doing everything possible to muddy up the truth about salvation.

"Stronger" - We sang this song for our response and communion song. We quietly sang the first part of the song (everything prior to the bridge) while the elements were being passed out, and then we sang the bridge and repeated the chorus after we took the elements. I was reminded how much I love this song when we attended the Hillsong Live concert in Kansas City a few weeks ago. It is a solid song about the gospel and what Jesus has done for us, and therefore it was a great fit for the message this weekend and for our time of communion.

This weekend was a good weekend of worship overall. Our team did a great job, and played and sang well together. I felt like the change to colder weather slowed our people down a little bit, but we celebrated the gospel and Jesus was lifted up as a result. I am so thankful for our church, and pray that the Lord continues to point us to His gospel and the salvation that is found in Him alone.

I hope you had a great weekend of worship wherever you were!

Set List, 09/01 - 09/02/12 - Fellowship Bible Church

This week our lead pastor, Joe Hishmeh, shared some biblical wisdom regarding leaving a godly legacy, as we finished our series called "Can You Relate?". In his message, Joe shared about how small changes today can have a long-lasting impact, far beyond what we could even imagine today. It was a challenge to be mindful of the impact that we can have on our children and on others around us who are watching our lives. You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here. For our singing this week, we focused on the gospel and on giving our lives to Jesus as living offerings of worship and thanksgiving for what He has done and is doing in our lives.

Here's our service plan from this weekend:

Pre-Service - "In Tenderness" (G) [W. Spencer Walton, Adoniram J. Gordon, Nate Garvey, arr. by Citizens] "Those Who Trust" (Em) [Don Chaffer] Welcome/Greeting Time Call To Worship/Confession "Let Me Sing" (Bb) [Todd Fields] "One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" (Bb) [Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black] "10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)" (G) [Jonas Myrin, Matt Redman] / "Glory to God Forever" (G) [Vicky Beeching, Steve Fee] Message - "Can You Relate? - Legacy" [Joe Hishmeh] Communion "Jesus Paid It All" (B) [Elvina M. Hall, John T. Grape, Alex Nifong] Offering/Announcements/Dismissal

"In Tenderness" - This was a new (to us anyway - it was written in 1894) song that we taught during our countdown this week. This is one of my favorite songs for the Church that I have heard this year. It is lyrically profound, while being musically straight-forward, energetic, and extremely catchy. I couldn't get it out of my head for at least two weeks. This is especially true of the chorus: "O the love that sought me/ O the blood that bought me/ O the grace that brought me to the fold of God/ Grace that brought me to the fold of God!"

"Those Who Trust" - This was technically our opening song this week, and it established a theme for the weekend in declaring that those who build their lives on - and trust in - the Lord will never be moved or shaken, because He is their foundation. He is constant and true, and we can trust Him to be with us no matter what we face in this life. This song is incredibly fun to play, especially with bassist Ben Engstrom and drummer Jordan Hymon, who love to play funk. It just works.

"Let Me Sing" - This song was key for our focus this week, as it put words to the idea of giving our lives as a response to how Jesus gave His life for our redemption. I love this song, and our church connects with it well.

"One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" - This was the third week of teaching this song to our congregation. We gave the song a week off last week, and brought it back as a refresher this weekend. This song contributed to our overall direction by giving us assurance and confidence in the unfailing love of God, which in turn gives us freedom to love and give fully.

"10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)"/"Glory To God Forever" - We sang this song just prior to the message this weekend, and it consisted of using all of "10,000 Reasons" and the bridge of "Glory to God Forever." That really put an exclamation point on where were going this week: "Take my life and let it be/ All for You and for Your glory/ Take my life and let it be Yours." That idea is where wanted our major emphasis to be this week.

"Jesus Paid It All" - During communion, we sang the traditional portion of this great hymn, and then after we took the elements together as a church, we sang the additional modern chorus ("O praise the One who paid my debt/ And raised this life up from the dead"). It was a beautiful moment of focusing powerfully on the gospel message, and the thanks and praise that are due to our Savior and King for what He has done for us!

This weekend was an incredible weekend of worship. Our team members all did a fantastic job of preparing and leading well. They worshiped sincerely, and pointed all eyes to Jesus, where they belong! Not only was it powerful, it was a lot of fun, too. Everything clicked well, and we were able to really "enjoy the moment" throughout the weekend. I am so grateful for what the Lord is doing in our team and in our congregation.

I hope you had a great weekend of worship wherever you were!

Set List, 08/18 - 08/19/12 - Fellowship Bible Church

This week our family pastor, Brian Tryhus, shared some biblical wisdom regarding parenting, as we continued our fourth week in our series called "Can You Relate?". In his message, Brian called us to be intentional at every opportunity with our parenting. He challenged us to the standard that Moses communicated with the Hebrew people in Deuteronomy 6:4-9, calling us to make it personal, to fight for the heart of our children, to imagine the end (know where we want to see our kids in the end), to create a rhythm, and to widen the circle (inviting others that we trust to be a part of influencing our kids). These concepts have been adapted from a great book, Parenting Beyond Your Capacity by Reggie Joiner and Carey Nieuwhof. You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here. For our singing this week, we focused on the redemption and the future that we have because of Christ. Just as the people of Israel, we walk most closely with the Lord when we remember what He has done for us, and live in response to that.

Here's our service plan from this weekend:

"Sing To The King" (E) [Billy Foote, Charles Sylvester Horne] Welcome/Greeting Time Call To Worship/Confession "Hallelujah To My King" (C) [Brenton Brown, Paul Baloche] "One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" (Bb) [Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black] "Your Great Name" (Bb) [Michael Neale, Krissy Nordhoff] Message - "Can You Relate? - Parenting" [Brian Tryhus] Offering Intro "10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)" (G) [Jonas Myrin, Matt Redman] Announcements/Dismissal

"Sing To The King" - This was our opening song this week, setting the stage for the service for us by focusing on the redemption, the future, and the victory that is in Christ. He has bought us with His precious blood, and we are His. All we are, and all we have is His. He is worthy of our everything. Sarah Oldberg did an awesome job leading on this one, as always.

"Hallelujah To My King" - After our time of reflection and confession, we continued with this song. This is another song along the lines of "Sing to the King," in that it recalls the finished work of Christ and the future hope that we have because of it. As John says in 1 John 3:3, everyone who has this hope purifies himself. Sarah led us on this song as well, and singing it in the key of C rather than the key of E or F gave it a very different feel, and it was great to hear the ladies singing out so well along with Sarah.

"One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" - This was the second week of teaching this song to our congregation. I think it really connecting with many people in our congregation. I love the message of this song, as it inspires our confidence in the Lord and what He has done for us. He, and His love, never fails! I think this is another song that will be a part of our regular worship vocabulary here at Fellowship, because it is something we need to believe, sing, and remember.

"Your Great Name" - This was the last song we sang before the message, and it remains one of our congregation's favorite songs. I love how powerfully it exalts the name of Jesus. We sang this because it focuses on who Jesus is and what He has done, and continues to do, for us. He is good, and He is worthy of all praise.

"10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)" - This was our response song this week, and it was a great fit with the focus of the message. As I said earlier, it is easier for us to follow closely with the Lord when we remember who He is and all He has done and is going to do. He is with us, and we can trust Him with everything we are. I love how the church sings out together on this one.

This weekend was as great weekend of worship. The team did a solid job, and Jesus was the focus of it all, which is the way it should be. We had two of our NextGen team members, Chandler Klamm and Hannah Deardorff, playing with us, and they did a great job. I am so proud of our NextGen team and the leadership that their director, Erik Oldberg, is giving them. God is doing great things in our young people here at Fellowship! God is so good, and it is awesome to be a part of His working and moving in our church. I know that our best days are ahead of us!

I hope you had a great weekend of worship wherever you were!

Set List, 08/11 - 08/12/12 - Fellowship Bible Church

This week our pastor, Joe Hishmeh, shared some biblical wisdom regarding marriage, as we continued our third week in our series called "Can You Relate?". In his message, Joe called us to the example of Christ and the Church. The three challenges were to You can listen to or watch the entire message and service here. For our singing this week, we focused on the unfailing love of God. He loved us when we were unlovable, and is faithful even when we are faithless (2 Tim. 2:13).

Here's our service plan from this weekend:

"Unchanging" (G) [Chris Tomlin] Welcome/Greeting Time Call To Worship/Confession "Blessed Be Your Name" (Bb) [Matt Redman, Beth Redman] "One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" (Bb) [Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black] "How He Loves" (Bb) [John Mark McMillan] Message - "Can You Relate? - Marriage" [Joe Hishmeh] Offering "You Never Let Go" (Bb) [Matt Redman, Beth Redman] Announcements/Dismissal

"Unchanging" - This was our opening song this week, because it laid the foundation for the rest of what we sang and studied in Scripture: God's faithful, steadfast love for us. It is one that is well-known for our congregation, so we sing it well together.

"Blessed Be Your Name" - We sang this song to continue with the truth that we can trust God no matter what, and that He is always in control and worthy of praise.

"One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)" - - This was a new song for much of our congregation, and it's one that I have become pretty excited about over the last week or so. It is a fairly simple song overall, repeating this line in the chorus: "Your love never fails/ It never gives up/ It never runs out on me." It has been sung and recorded by at least four groups, so look it up. This is one that we will continue to sing in the future, because it a great reminder about God's love.

"How He Loves" - this is a very familiar song through various avenues, but is one that I haven't led before with Fellowship. It really resonates with many in our congregation. I enjoy the fresh, unique lyric in the verses, and the simple pre-chorus and chorus. And yes, we sing the Crowder lyric ("unforeseen kiss"). I cannot sing "sloppy wet kiss" without laughing.

"You Never Let Go" - This was our response song this week, as it pointed us once again to the steadfast love of God. His love casts out fear and gives us rest, because He never leaves us or forsakes us. The Lord is so good to us, and we find hope in His unfailing love.

This weekend was a great weekend of worship together. The team did a fantastic job serving the congregation. One thing I was reminded of this week was that I need to leave room in my worship planning for songs that are currently and freshly moving my heart. That song this week was "One Thing Remains." It has really been encouraging me to trust God more over this past week. I still very much believe that my planning is what I need to do to lead my congregation well, but my leading feels more alive when I am finding and incorporating songs that are speaking to my heart in fresh ways. It made the weekend very special for me. I will definitely keep this tweak in mind as I plan toward the future.

I hope you had a great weekend of worship wherever you were!
