Name Above All Names - Song Background

Verse 1
Kings will shut their mouths
And nations bow down
To Your throne
Your enemies will fall
And rulers stand in awe
Of Your might, of Your might

Chorus
You are the Name above all names
You are the King above all kings
Forever You will reign, we will declare
You are the Name above all names

Verse 2
The mountains tremble
And the waves remember
Your voice
The stars are burning
And the earth is turning
By Your hand, by Your hand

Bridge
Every knee will bow before You
Every tongue confess that You are Lord, You are Lord
Every knee will bow before You
Every tongue confess that You are King, You are King

Chorus 2
You are the Name above all names
You are the King above all kings
Forever You will reign
You are the Name above all names

This song came primarily from a few places in the Bible–Isaiah 52:15 and Philippians 2:9-11. The Isaiah passage appears just prior to the passage in Isaiah 53 that is commonly called "The Suffering Servant." It tells of how, as a result of Jesus' final victory over sin,

"...kings shall shut their mouths because of him;
for that which has not been told them they see,
and that which they have not heard they understand." (Isaiah 52:15 ESV)

From there, the passage proceeds to talk about how Jesus would conquer sin and death and justify lost sinners by His own willing suffering and death. When it is all said and done, He will stand satisfied at His finished work of redemption, and all will bow to Him.

The Philippians passage speaks of the Father's response to Jesus' obedient sacrifice at the cross:

"God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV)

These two passages are among my favorites Scriptures, as they speak of the juxtaposition of Jesus' humble, obedient sacrifice at the cross for our redemption and His ultimate rule and reign as the sovereign Lord of all. That's what this song is all about. Jesus is Lord, and every knee will bow to Him, and we will declare that truth for eternity.
